Sleeping under treated mosquito nets is essential, especially in malaria areas . Mosquito nets also give the user a peaceful night where any biting insects are prevalent. All nets we stock are treated with Permethrin or Deltamethrin. derived from a naturally occurring chemical compound and has insecticide properties that will kill or deter insects from any mosquito net treated with it. Permethrin and Deltamethrinand are totally safe for human use.
Depending on the amount of use, type and handling, nets should be re treated, frequency and time vary depending on manufacturer from 2 months to 2 years.
You need to take into a consideration a few points when purchasing a net, they come in various shapes and sizes, with or without hanging kits, also different mesh sizes and strengths.
Hanging Information
Nearly all mosquito nets need something to hang on, ceilings, walls, rafters, tree,s etc, if you are in a large hall or room, you would have to use a pop up or a free hanging stand. For walls use a wedge net, all other shapes hang from above.
Not all nets come with hanging kits, but a typical hanging kit would comprise of a couple of metres of nylon, a few screw hooks and Gaffa tape

Material and Mesh size
Many types of materials are being used for making nets. The most common are: cotton, nylon, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, and synthetic/cotton mixtures. These are either knitted or woven to create the netting material which is made into different shapes and sizes of nets, the world health organization recommends a a minimum of 156 holes per inch, you can buy nets up to 400 holes per inch, the more holes per inch, the heavier the net, and the less ventilation i.e. it is hotter sleeping under a 300 holes per inch net than a 200.
Denier
The strength of the thread expressed as the weight of 9 000 meters of thread in grams. Three options, 40, 75, 100 deniers are available at present. Of these, the 40 and 75 denier nets are too fragile. The 100 denier 156 mesh is the strongest providing more durability against wear, tear and use. The extra cost for this compared to the lower denier ones is considered worthwhile, hardly any manufacturers give denier details!
Shape and Size
The more commonly used designs are the rectangular, conical, and wedge. Rectangular nets are multi point and are more spacious, reduing the chances of arms and legs touching nets. Rectangular nets are preferred over other styles because they allow a larger area of coverage inside the net, but they take more time to erect, so are not ideal for travel, but great for long stays and perfect for use in the home or holiday apartment.
For travel we would recommend conical, wedge, or pyramid shapes, as they are generally quicker, lighter and easier to hang, and are especially useful in smaller rooms.
We have erected all our nets on a normal size single bed (3ft x 6ft 2") to see how they fit, The cheaper minamilistic nets are the smallest especially the Adventurer and the compact, the backpacker sea to sumitt was suprisingly large) being very small, compact and very light, they are ideal for emergency use, indoors and outdoors, small camper beds, and can be used on a single bed but are not big enough to tuck edges under the mattress. for more info in sizes click here
Permethren Treated nets
The efficacy of unwashed treated-nets may last about 6 months, allowing 6 monthly re treatments where year round protection is expected. Washing can remove about half the permethrin and more than half the insecticidal activity.
Deltamethrin Treated nets
Allow better adherence to the substrate and longer residual activity. Their use may be cheaper per individual net treatment. However they tend to be more toxic (than permethrin) to mammals and insects, again re treatment is necessary but last much longer 24 months or 35 washes.
