Recoverice Equine Wraps are a revolutionary horse bandage utilising cold therapy for preventing and treating horse injury, by dissipating heat from tendons and joints. Cold therapy is most effective during the first 48 hours of an injury or inflammation and if correctly used, can help improve a range of muscle, joint, and soft tissue injuries. The use of cold therapy after a hard workout may also help a horse with chronic conditions, such as weak tendons and ligaments from a past injury.
Proven to reduce horse injury recovery time, Recoverice Equine wraps are perfect for stables / yards and shows, a handy size for First Aid kits, easy and safe to apply and requiring no pre-cooling or preparation of any description - no fuss, no mess!
Simply tear open the packet and the Recoverice Equine wrap immediately begins cooling. Cooling has been shown to speed recovery of muscular bruises and strains, limiting swelling by reducing blood flow to the injured area. It also provides short term pain relief.
This easy to apply horse bandage has a unique colour coding system that enables you to apply it in such a way that it provides optimum compression for healing. Compression helps limit and reduce swelling (which slows down healing). According to an article published in the, ' Horse & Hound' (March 2009), 'Cooling compression bandages are useful for horses whose muscles have been exerted through training or exercise, and are especially popular with event riders and driving competitors, in the cross-country and marathon stages respectively.
Recoverice Equine wraps can be left in place for extended periods of time. The bandage is designed to get gradually colder for the first 10 minutes, then remain cool for up to two hours. The technique uses evaporation to draw heat out, rather than push cold in, as the bandage wraps around the injured area, allowing penetration from all angles and ensuring no damage to the skin - unlike ice, ice and gel packs and some sprays.
Recoverice wraps have the added bonus of including arnica, a natural remedy that helps to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and speed up healing time.
Equine wraps can be used on wind galls - ideal to use prior to going into the ring, and for capped hocks. They save time (and the possibility of mud fever) compared to cold hosing, allowing you to get on with preparing your horse for a show or mucking out. |

WHAT IS COLD THERAPY (CRYOTHERAPY)?
Cryotherapy is the use of cooling to treat injuries.
The effects of cooling on damaged soft tissues has been thoroughly researched and although the benefits are widely accepted, there are varying opinions on the duration of the cooling process in order to gain maximum benefit.
According to an publication by David W. Ramey, DVM, entitled, 'Cold Therapy in the Horse':
'In human medicine, cold therapy is commonly used to treat acute soft tissue injuries and to help reduce symptoms of inflammation at the end of exercise. In addition, cold therapy appears to have significant analgesic effect and is also used to help alleviate pain in post-surgical patients. Cold therapy is commonly used in the treatment of inflammation and soft tissue injuries in the horse, as well. The application of cold has been recommended in the treatment of acute tendon injuries, suspensory desmitis, laminitis as well as other non-specific areas of swelling and inflammation. It has also been advocated in pre-exercise therapy.'
However the use of ice, ice and gel packs and chemical ice envelopes can have disadvantages as they have an, ' ...inability to maintain a constant temperature over a prolonged period of time. All of the methods listed above lose effectiveness as they are warmed by the heat of the limb. Second is that when ice at 0° C, is used as the cooling modality there is a potential for tissue injury if the modality is applied for an excessive period to time.'
Recoverice Equine wraps are designed to chill down in the first 10 minutes to an optimum temperature for the reduction of swelling. They then remain at a constant temperature for up to 2 hours. Recoverice wraps chill the area without damaging tissue or nerves. They can be left in place for extended periods of time, although we would recommend getting professional medical advice before treating any injury to your horse.
THE USE OF COMPRESSION IN ACUTE INJURIES
Ramey goes on to add, '...The combination of pressure and cold is an excellent combination for the treatment of injured limbs. Compressive dressing is thought to reduce the amount of swelling by altering the intracellular and extra cellular pressure relationships.'
Recoverice Equine wraps are compression bandages. They have been designed for ease of application with blue and yellow lines to indicate how the bandage should be applied in order to achieve optimum compression required for an acute injury. These lines are unique to Recoverice wraps. Our research has shown that if the angle of bandaging is altered too much then you will not achieve the requisite compression necessary for recovery.
THE BENEFITS OF A COLD COMPRESSION BANDAGE OVER ICE OR AN ICE PACK
Ramey states that: 'Excessive application of cold to tissue has the potential to cause tissue damage or nerve injury. The lower limbs of the horse are almost ideally suited to the application of cold therapy. Being roughly cylindrical, cold can be easily and conveniently applied using a number of different bandaging techniques. Newer technologies make the application of cold easier, more convenient and more effective. There are many applications of cold therapy to equine limbs. However, one common application in human medicine, the use of cold post-surgery, appears not to have been used to a great extent in equine surgery.'
